Ivan Gil-Ortega

Artistic Director, Ivan Gil-Ortega commences his inaugural season with Queensland Ballet in January 2026. With over 29 years’ experience as a dancer, director and producer with the world’s leading ballet companies, he brings a distinctly international perspective to Queensland Ballet, strengthening the Company’s global connections while shaping work that resonates powerfully with local audiences.

Renowned for his artistic excellence, technical refinement, and compelling character interpretations, Gil-Ortega was celebrated for his elegance on stage and exceptional partnering skills. Since 1995 he has worked extensively across the global ballet landscape, performing, directing, coaching, and staging major productions for international companies worldwide.

Born in Spain, Gil-Ortega is fluent in Spanish, English, German, Italian, and Portuguese, a linguistic breadth that has been invaluable in his international career, enabling him to engage deeply with artists and audiences across diverse cultural landscapes.

Building on his extensive training in Spain and Germany, Gil-Ortega spent a decade as a Principal Artist with Stuttgart Ballet, Germany (1995–2007), followed by Dutch National Ballet (2007–2008), performing in numerous acclaimed productions.

Alongside these principal appointments, Gil-Ortega has worked extensively as a principal guest artist with many of the world’s most prestigious companies including Ballet de Santiago de Chile, Bayerisches Staatsballett Munich, Finnish National Ballet, Croatian National Ballet, West Australian Ballet, Ballet del Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Arena di Verona, Teatro di San Carlo Napoli, Nürnberg Staatsballet, Universal Ballet of Korea, National Ballet of Korea, and Slovenian National Ballet.

Notably, principal roles have been created for Gil-Ortega by some of the most influential choreographers of our time, including the late Dutch choreographer and director, Dutch National Ballet, Hans van Manen, American choreographer and director, William Forsythe, German choreographer and director, Staatsballet Berlin, Christian Spuck and Spanish choreographer and director, Staatsballett Hannover, Goyo Montero.

As a ballet assistant and stager, he has collaborated closely with luminaries such as renowned Cuban dancer and director, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Carlos Acosta, German choreographer and director, Christian Spuck, Spanish choreographer and director, Goyo Montero and British choreographer and former director, English National Ballet, Derek Deane.

These collaborations have resulted in critically acclaimed productions including Swan Lake and Romeo & Juliet for English National Ballet; The Nutcracker, Cinderella, and The Sleeping Beauty at Staatstheater Nürnberg; Chacona for Birmingham Royal Ballet; The Sleeping Beauty for Maggio Musicale Fiorentino;

The Lady of the Camellias for Teatro San Carlo Napoli and the Croatian National Ballet; and The Nutcracker, Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, Swan Lake, Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, and The Lady of the Camellias for Shanghai Ballet.

Gil-Ortega has a long-standing relationship with Queensland Ballet, having played a key creative role in the Company’s sell-out productions of Strictly Gershwin in 2016 and 2023, working closely alongside Derek Deane as a senior creative collaborator.

From 2020–2021, he served as rehearsal director and stager for the Bolshoi Ballet on the world premiere of Orlando by Christian Spuck. He has also worked closely with Carlos Acosta on the launch of Carmen, created for The Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House.

In addition to his artistic achievements, Gil-Ortega holds several prestigious advisory roles within the international dance community. He served as Vice President of the Prix de Lausanne (2019), has been a Jury Member for Youth America Grand Prix since 2019, and was President of the Jury for the Certamen Coreográfico Burgos, New York (2014/2015).

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to dance, Gil-Ortega was awarded the Premio Positano de Danza – Léonide Massine in 2009.
